Colour Reproduction of Johnsons Map of Italy 1863Italy 1863 By Johnson
This stunning map has been reproduced directly from our original steel plate engraving, dating to 1870 by the legendary American mapmaker A. J. Johnson. It represents Italy. Additionally, in the bottom left-hand corner there is a superbly designed inset map of Malta and its dependencies. Johnson’s map of Italy comes from the 1870 edition of Johnson’s Atlas. Note the exceptionally fine border and colours. Political boundaries as well as major rivers, territories, and counties are carefully labelled. An interesting aspect of this particular map is the designation of intercontinental telegraph lines. Also included are major roads, trade routes, and proposed railroads. Further, all notable mountains, swamps, passes, and even important trading posts are labelled. Although this map is from the 1870 edition of the atlas, the actual engraving is dated 1863.
All major bodies of water, rivers, mountains, islands, and sub-regions are labelled. All major cities are also labelled. Most major national and local political distinctions are outlined and defined by vibrant colour.
